Ingredients
- 450-500 ml wheat flour
- 100 ml granulated sugar
- 100 ml syrup
- 1 egg
- 125 g butter or margarine
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp ginger
- 1 tsp cloves
- 1 tsp baking soda
How to Make Gingerbread Cookies
Mix the syrup, sugar and spices. Put them in a saucepan and heat until they boil. Add the butter and stir until it has melted. Let it cool. While you wait, carefully mix the baking soda into the flour. Once the syrup mixture has cooled, add the egg first and then the flour mixture. Mix well. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rest in the refrigerator, preferably overnight.
Cut the dough into few pieces as it is easier to roll. Roll out on a lightly floured surface until it’s about 3 mm (1/8 inch) thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out your desired shapes. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with baking paper or sprinkled with flour. Bake the cookies in a 200 degree oven for 5–8 minutes, depending on the thickness and size of the gingerbread cookies. They can be a bit soft when you take them out of the oven. The cookies will become harder as they cool.
