For a winter hike, it’s important to be well-prepared to stay warm, dry, and safe. Make sure to check the weather forecast before heading out and inform someone about your plans and expected return time. Here’s a checklist of essential items to pack for a winter hike.

What to Pack for a Winter Hike?

Clothing

  • Insulated waterproof jacket and pants
  • Base layers (thermal shirts and leggings)
  • Insulating layer (fleece or down mid-layer)
  • Waterproof gloves and gloves liner
  • Warm hat and a buff or neck gaiter
  • Wool or thermal socks (bring extra pairs)
  • Gaiters (to keep snow out of your boots)
  • Waterproof hiking boots with good traction

Gear

  • Backpack with enough capacity
  • Map and compass or GPS device (pack the map and compass anyway)
  • Fully charged phone and portable charger
  • Headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
  • Trekking poles with snow baskets

  • Emergency blanket or bivvy sack
